A byline from the archive. Bylines are reproduced as the magazine printed them, and every story a contributor signed stays live at its original address. Where a biography ran with the story it appears below; where the magazine printed none, the record is the work itself. Contributors to an annual are a mix of staff editors, industry practitioners writing on their own projects and freelance reporters, and the magazine did not distinguish between them on the page — the section a story ran in is usually the better guide to how it was commissioned.
The contributor index holds 31 names and 143 signed stories. A byline page exists here because the magazine printed one, and it keeps its own address whether or not a signed story survived into the snapshot: a link made to it years ago still resolves. The annuals credited staff editors, practitioners writing about their own projects and freelance reporters in the same type, so the department a story ran in is usually the better guide to how it was commissioned than the byline is.
Everything filed here is the magazine's own reporting, kept at its original address and re-laid into the current design rather than re-edited. Where a story named a practice, a budget or a room count, the figure is the one that issue printed, and it has been left as it was printed: a 2009 budget is a 2009 budget, and the value of the archive is precisely that it says what was thought at the time instead of what turned out to be true later.
A note on navigation. Every story here can also be reached from the issue it ran in, from the contributor who wrote it and, where the text names a practice, from that practice's page in the firm directory. Those four routes lead to the same file at the same address; none of them is a copy. If a link from elsewhere on the web points at an older form of one of these addresses, it still arrives, because the old address was kept and pointed here rather than retired.
