FIRM DIRECTORY01

Firms named in the archive

Architects, interior designers, landscape designers and procurement houses named in the stories, with the projects each appears in. The directory is built by reading the archive rather than by invitation: a practice is listed because the magazine named it in a story or printed it in a project's credits, and the count beside it is how many stories that is. A single casino routinely carries four or five of these names at once — design architect, architect of record, one or two interior practices and a contractor — and the roles are not interchangeable. What each credit line actually means is set out in the guide to reading a credit block.

12 practices clear the bar of three stories and get a page; the most-named is HBG Design at 17. Nobody is listed for buying a page. A practice appears because a story named it, and it drops off the directory the moment the archive stops naming it three times. Each firm page collects the stories that carry the name, oldest annual to newest, so the directory doubles as a rough project history: who was working on which floor, and in which year.

What follows is the archive as the magazine left it, sorted rather than summarised. Headlines keep their original addresses, the issue each story ran in stays with it, and where two stories disagree about a property both are kept: the earlier one is what was planned, the later one is what was built. Reading them in that order is usually more instructive than either on its own, which is why nothing has been quietly superseded or removed.

Two things are worth knowing about how this part of the site is put together. The first is that a page is never generated for a heading that has nothing under it: if a rubric appears in the navigation, there is reporting behind it. The second is that the archive is closed at the far end and open at the near one — the earliest issues will not grow, while the current section keeps taking new work, so the balance between them shifts a little with every issue.
