MGM COTAI: Macau's Integrated Spectacle

30 October 2026

Macau's MGM COTAI dazzles as a US$3.4 billion integrated resort, MGM's second casino, hotel and entertainment complex in the area. The resort, with its modular, stacked-box design and high-tech LED lighting, opened on February 13, 2018. Its temple-inspired architecture reflects a traditional Chinese jewelry box. The property boasts 1,400 hotel rooms, a 200,000-square-foot casino, an 80,000-square-foot convention center, and 60,000 square feet of retail space. Yet this was just the beginning.

The Main Attraction

At the heart of the complex lies "The Spectacle", a breathtaking 96,000-square-foot atrium welcoming over 2,000 guests. The centerpiece is the world's largest permanent indoor LED display. This technological marvel covers an area equivalent to a football pitch, stretching four stories tall. MGM created seven hours of exclusive content featuring natural landscapes. The space also showcases a 1,500-piece gold and white quartzite nanchu mosaic worthy of the resort's $3.4 billion price tag.

The exterior design complements the massive 200,000-square-foot gaming floor, 80,000-square-foot convention facilities, 60,000-square-foot shopping area, and Asia's pioneering dynamic theater featuring 2,000 seats and a 900 square-meter LED wall. This property redefined Macau's hospitality landscape.

Stacked Boxes, Integrated Luxury

The 1.2 million square foot tower's innovative design features eight cantilevered boxes forming a single sculptural shape from two original towers. KPF designed the initial concept, with KPMG implementing sustainable luxury. The building achieves 40% reductions in water and energy consumption, cuts waste by 50%, and became the first property in the region to earn LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council in 2018.

MGM COTAI stands as a beacon of modern hospitality. Its distinctive cruise-ship silhouette and harmonious connection with the surrounding retail spaces create a unique urban landmark. From the 2,000-seat theater at its base to the expansive atrium at its core and the luxurious penthouses atop, this integrated resort encapsulates Macau's glittering appeal.
