OUTLOOK

OUTLOOK in Casino Design 2019. What the next building cycle looks like — forecasts, pipeline reports and the market conditions shaping casino construction. The rest of the issue follows below. Sections are the magazine's own: each annual was assembled out of departments that recurred from year to year, and the pages are kept at the addresses the issue gave them.

10 stories sit under OUTLOOK, all of them from 2019. The longest of them is The Technology Revolution.

Across the sections of the magazine they break down as Gaming Floor (3), Architecture (3), Development (3) and Interiors (1). The design moves that come back most often here are theming (6), carpet (5), smoke-free floors (4) and led lighting (4), counted by reading the text of every story rather than from tags. The practices named more than once are SOSH Architects (4), Cuningham Group Architecture (4), HBG Design (3) and Thalden Boyd Emery Architects (2), each with its own page in the firm directory. OUTLOOK is one of 6 departments in Casino Design 2019; the others are Columns, COMPANY PROFILES, Departments, FEATURES and GGB Directory. The issue as a whole carried 24 stories, and all of them are listed on the Casino Design 2019 page. In order, the set runs The Technology Revolution, The Brave New World of Design and Construction: An Industry Roundtable, The Art of the Resort, The $50 Million Budget: Real Renovation, Designing Forward, Renovation Nation, Casino Design Awards 2020, Best of the Boardwalk, Golden Age Redux? and Golden Transformation. 7 bylines appear on them — Casino Design Staff, Julie Brinkerhoff Jacobs, David Schwartz and Klaus Steinke & Jane Lee — and each contributor has a page listing everything of theirs the archive holds.

Everything filed here is the magazine's own reporting, kept at its original address and re-laid into the current design rather than re-edited. Where a story named a practice, a budget or a room count, the figure is the one that issue printed, and it has been left as it was printed: a 2009 budget is a 2009 budget, and the value of the archive is precisely that it says what was thought at the time instead of what turned out to be true later.
